Reflections on the Concepts and Methodology of Experimental Archaeology – From Terminology Standardization to the Challenges of Modern Equipment
Speaker: Dr. Tang Bangcheng, PhD Candidate (School of Archaeology and Museology, Sichuan University)
Moderator: Dr. Luo Yingjie, PhD Candidate (School of Archaeology and Museology, Sichuan University)
Abstract:
Based on the theory of experimental archaeology, this talk clarifies the expressions of academic terms such as simulation experiment, replication study, replication experiment, simulation study, experimental reconstruction, and experimental re-enactment, standardizing the development of experimental archaeology research. It elucidates the definitions and distinctions between experimental reconstruction and experimental re-enactment, observes and categorizes the current divisions in experimental archaeology research, shares specific experimental archaeological cases and experiences, and investigates the impact of modern equipment on experimental archaeological research. Two measures are proposed to enhance the archaeological value of experimental archaeology: avoiding the use of modern equipment in experimental design and implementation, and maintaining selective control in the interpretation of results.
